"Fight against dolphin kills - go to this site to send an e-mail"
Caving in to foreign pressure, Administration officials are close to permanently changing the meaning of the "dolphin-safe" label, a guide for environmentally conscious Americans. In a few short days, Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans will issue a "final label finding" about whether chasing and intentionally netting dolphins in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean has significant adverse effects on dolphins.
His decision will determine the fate of our nation's "dolphin-safe" tuna standards.
The "dolphin-safe" tuna label was established in 1990 to protect dolphins from tuna fishermen who chase, harass, encircle, capture, harm and even kill dolphins.It ensured that any tuna caught by intentionally netting dolphins could not be labeled "dolphin-safe" and sold in the United States. Between the late 1950's and the implementation of "dolphin-safe" labeling, more than 7 million dolphins died in tuna nets.
Since the advent of the "dolphin-safe" labeling program, dolphin deaths have decreased by 97% – but the already-depleted dolphin population will likely not survive any loosening of standards.
