03/22/2003 "Shooting Birds probably encouraged by their parents who buy them the Guns; When will they Learn?"

News 12's Christy Douglas joins us from the newsroom with more.

Shreveport police have charged a 16 year old with illegal use of a weapon. He allegedly was shooting at birds when 48 year old Richard Ryan was struck in the side. It's a situation that has city officials rethinking safety on the job while folks in Allendale wonder about their own.

Billy Payton has lived in Shreveport's Allendale neighborhood most of his life. Through good times and bad. Billy Payton: " The neighborhood is really quiet now long time ago it used to be all uproaring how it's just quieter much quieter now."

But Wednesday afternoon Allendale wasn't quiet. A bullet through the trees stopped this drainage ditch project behind the St. Paul United Methodist Church. The owner of a construction company working on a city project is in intensive care now. Mike Strong: "It's a very sad, situation it makes us very concerned about the safety of employees." Billy Payton is familiar with this particular stretch of Pierre Avenue. A street that floods with kids after school. Billy Payton: "I normally see the kids run by on the crosswalk cross the street and they normally go down that same hill you know but that was a bad situation.
